The primary function of the Guidance Department is to assist students in making the decisions which affect their education and to implement programs which will aid them in reaching their full potential at this school.

To this end, Cathedral High School employs two full–time guidance counselors who are responsible for advising students on their academic choices and seeing that counseling is available either through this department or elsewhere. Both counselors counsel underclassmen concerning their academic careers, including advising them on course selection, informing them of support services which are available, and counseling them on various matters related to their student life at Cathedral High School. Counselors also work with seniors regarding college selection and placement, SAT’s and applications.

The Guidance Department also provides auxiliary services to help students accomplish their goals. The department hosts a number of events throughout the year for students and parents alike such as college fairs, a financial aid night, and a freshmen and sophomore parent night. In addition, the department brings representatives from over 50 colleges to CHS to meet with interested students for information sessions and college interviews.

The College/Career Center is a state–of–the–art computer lab for students to have access to information about careers and colleges. The computers in the career center are equipped with a program called Naviance which is a personalized web–based college search program utilized by juniors and seniors. It also provides college catalogs, CDs, videos, DVDs and all the materials needed for students to make responsible career choices. The career center is available to all students.

All seniors have access to Naviance. All juniors will have access second semester.

The Guidance Department also offers students many summer academic programs and enrichment and service experience opportunities. These include Harvard Crimson Summer Academy, Summer Search, Outward Bound, Upward Bound, and internships at various businesses and law firms. For the parents of the students, the Guidance Department hosts college information nights and financial aid workshops conducted by professionals. There is a full–time guidance secretary who is in charge of office management and processing transcripts.
