Advanced Art

In this course students will develop their abilities to express themselves through their artwork. The course will focus on expanding the skills of drawing, painting as well as how to work three dimensionally. Students will also develop an understanding of art history. Students will keep a personal sketchbook.

COMPETENCY GOAL 1: The learner will show the understanding of a range of subject matter and ideas to be able to communicate the intended meaning in artworks. Objectives:

  • Demonstrate the use of original and personal imagery to convey meaning
  • Research and discuss how artists develop personal imagery and style.
  • Apply subjects, symbols and ideas in artworks and use the skills gained to solve problems in daily life.

COMPETENCY GOAL 2: The learner will understand the visual arts in relation to history and cultures. Objectives:

  • Know that the visual arts have a history, purpose and function in all cultures.
  • Identify specific works of art as belonging to particular cultures, times and places.
  • Compare relationships of works of art to one another in terms of history, aesthetics, and cultural/ethnic groups.
  • Describe the existence of art movements, periods, and styles.
  • Describe universal themes that exist in art throughout history.
  • Recognize and discuss that cultures have different aesthetics and each individual is a product of his or her culture.

COMPETENCY GOAL 3:The learnerassess the characteristics and merits of their work and the work of others. Objectives:

  • Describe the various purposes for creating works of visual art.
  • Describe how people’s experiences influence the development of specific artworks.
  • Explain why what is not understood is sometimes devalued.
  • Use the proper vocabulary of art in oral and written expression.
  • Explain the varied responses to specific artworks.
  • Accept and offer constructive criticism.

COMPETENCY GOAL 4: The learner will perceive connections between visual arts and other disciplines. Objectives:

  • Identify connections, similarities and differences between the visual arts and other disciplines.
  • Describe ways the art elements and design principles interrelate within all arts disciplines.
  • Read about and discuss universal themes that exist within the arts disciplines.
  • Compare characteristics of visual arts within a particular historical period or style with ideas, issues or themes in other disciplines.
  • Discuss and explain how current technology impacts visual arts and other disciplines.

COMPETENCY GOAL 5: The learner will develop an awareness of art as an avocation and profession. Objectives:

  • List and discuss art related avocations.
  • List and discuss art professions.
  • Articulate how art provides an opportunity for lifelong learning.
