Health and Physical Education I
This course is designed to explore various types of fitness activities, team sports, and lifetime sports. An important component of this course is fitness testing and the development of a personal fitness plan.
COMPETENCY GOAL 1: The student will develop an understanding of safety and fair play. Objectives:
- Explain warm up and cool down techniques and their importance.
- Describe the importance and advantages of team work
- Explain the importance of rules and sportsmanship around fitness and athletic activities.
COMPETENCY GOAL 2: The students will develop an understanding of the importance of fitness, and the various types of fitness options available. Objectives:
- Explain the benefits of fitness, physically, emotionally and socially
- Describe the importance of fitness testing and being aware of your personal fitness level.
- Explain and describe various types of cardiovascular, muscular strength, muscular endurance and flexibility exercises.
- Develop and maintain a personal fitness plan.
COMPETENCY GOAL 3: The students will develop an understanding of various team sports, the skills required to play them and the rules of the game. Objectives:
- Describe and demonstrate the skills and rules for the following team sports:
- Flag football
- Floor hockey
- Volleyball
- Soccer
- Whiffleball
- Basketball
- Team Handball
- Ultimate Frisbee
- Describe and demonstrate the skills and rules for the following lifetime sports:
- Badminton
- Table Tennis
- Aerobics
- Power walking
- Weight training
- Pilates
- Yoga
- Tae Bo
- Golf
- Tennis
- Meditation and stress relief
COMPETENCY GOAL 4: The student will develop an understanding of problem solving skills, team work skills, and develop the skills needed to overcome weakness while using teammates strengths. Objectives:
- Students will realize that everyone has various strengths and weaknesses
- Students will communicate in a positive manner with one another.
- Describe how to overcome weakness and how each member of the group helps that group to succeed.
- Explain how to work together to solve various physical and mental challenges.
- Explain the value of teamwork, communication, and acceptance of classmate’s differences.
