New Testament
This course will attempt to deepen the students' awareness and familiarity with the person of Jesus and the community that developed around Him. It will foster an understanding of the Christian message as seen through books of the New Testament. This course is also designed to deepen each student’s personal faith. No matter his/her faith background.
Textbook: Catholic Youth Bible (NRSV: Catholic Edition)
COMPETENCY GOAL 1: Students will understand the content of the Gospels. Objectives:
- Students will appreciate the tradition out of which Jesus arrives as the Christ.
- Students will understand how to read the accounts of Jesus Christ offered by the four Gospels.
- Students will appreciate the historical background of the Gospel accounts.
COMPETENCY GOAL 2: Students will understand the person of Jesus Christ.
Objectives:
- Students will understand what it means to call Jesus Christ and Savior.
- Students will gain an appreciation of the doctrine that Jesus Christ is fully human and fully divine.
- Students will gain an appreciation of the paschal mystery.
- Students will be called upon to find the presence of Jesus Christ in the world today.
COMPETENCY GOAL 3: Students will learn about the growth of the Christian community. Objectives:
- Students will learn how the Christian community grew as a people of God, beginning with the testimony offered in the New Testament.
- Students will be challenged to appreciate the universal character of Christ’s Church and how all Christian communities proceed from their origin in Christ.
