Health I

This course is designed to explore the mental, social, emotional, and physical issues facing teenagers in today’s society.  The course content provides information that encourages students to make well informed healthy decisions.  An important component of this course is to begin to realize the affects their decisions have on themselves and those associated with them and how their decisions shape them as a person.

COMPETENCY GOAL 1: The students will develop an understanding of the skills and the importance of communication and decision making. Objectives:

  • Describe good communication skills and their importance.
  • Describe good decision making skills and their importance.
  • Explain resistance techniques and how to deal with peer pressure.
  • Describe risk-taking behaviors among teens.
  • Describe non-violent ways to deal with conflict.

COMPETENCY GOAL 2: The student will develop an understanding of family types and how the family unit works. Objectives:

  • Describe the history of family and how it has evolved over time.
  • Describe the various types of families.
  • Explain family relationships and their importance.
  • Identify possible family crisis and positive ways to deal with it.

COMPETENCY GOAL 3: The student will develop an understanding of the various personality types and their characteristics.  Students will also discover their own personality type. Objectives:

  • Describe and understand personality types
  • Understand typical characteristics if certain personality types
  • Identify your own personality type.
  • Describe healthy ways to accept and deal with those who have different personality types than you.

COMPETENCY GOAL 4: The student will develop an understanding of social, emotional, and mental health. Objectives:

  • Describe what stress is and its physical and psychological effects on teens.
  • Describe healthy ways of dealing with stress.
  • Describe healthy ways of expressing feelings and emotions.
  • Describe and understand teenage anxiety and depression.
  • Explain how to be a resilient teen.
  • Understand and explain domestic violence and its impact on victims and aggressors.
  • Recognize the signs, causes, and effects of suicide
  • Describe positive non-violent ways of resolving conflict.

COMPETENCY GOAL 5: The students will develop and understanding of the effects and dangers of tobacco, alcohol, and drug use. Objectives:

  • Describe the dangers of use physically, psychologically, and socially.
  • Describe the effects of use on those associated with the user.
  • Describe the effects of use on a fetus.
  • Develop an understanding of the message the media is trying to send teens.
  • Identify treatment options for those dependent on alcohol, tobacco and/or drugs.

COMPETENCY GOAL 6: The student will develop an understanding of the reproductive system and the implications of unsafe sexual contact. Objectives:

  • Describe the functioning of the male and female reproductive systems.
  • Describe changes related to puberty.
  • Explain menstruation, ovulation, and fertilization.
  • Explain the benefits of abstinence.
  • Identify prevention, cause, symptoms, and the treatment of sexually transmitted infections, including HIV and AIDS.
  • Explain the possibility of teenage pregnancy and its impact on the lives of those involved both physically, socially, emotionally and financially.
