Drafting and Design

This course is an introduction to the study of drafting and the elements of design.The first half of the year focus on the skills needed to draw a set of house plans using the traditional hands on method.As the method of creating a house plan is being studied, work will also be done with designs of personal spaces.The second half of the year will deal with what it means to be a designer, finishing a set of plans and how the student can make ideas into realities.There will be problem solving and building with materials.The course is open to 10th, 11th and 12 grades.

COMPETENCY GOAL 1: The learner will develop critical and creative thinking skills and perceptual awareness necessary for understanding how a structure is conceived.Objectives:

  • Plan and organize for creating a space.
  • Devise and use strategies for imagining and implementing designs.
  • Create multiple solutions in problem solving and discuss that some solutions are better than others.
  • Show how ideas develop and evolve over a period of time.
  • Use the vocabulary of drafting and design in written and oral form.

COMPETENCY GOAL 2: The learner will develop skills necessary for understanding and applying techniques, and processes. Objectives:

  • Discuss and implement proper line uniformity, contrast and darkness.
  • Discuss and use proper architectural lettering technique.
  • Discuss and use basic technical drawing techniques.

COMPETENCY GOAL 3:The learner will develop skill with manual drafting equipment, tool and supplies. Objectives:

  • Identify and use the following: pencils, leads, sharpeners, erasers, dusting brush, compass, dividers, templates, triangles, irregular curves, scales and papers.
  • Discuss and draw a floor plan based on personal design.
  • Discuss and draw an elevation based on the aforementioned plan.
  • Develope presentation skills
