Science Department

The purpose of the science department is to educate the students of Cathedral High School to be critical thinkers who are responsible for their actions, to be reflective thinkers who are cognizant of the wider world, and to be productive thinkers who grow to become good citizens.

The objectives of the science department are crafted specifically to meet its purposes. In order to develop our students into critical thinkers we present the content of science as a work in progress, encouraging our students to question the status quo, to examine all sides of scientific progress, and to appreciate all alternatives in the ever widening area of ethical decision making. In order to develop our students into reflective thinkers we use the wider world as a source of curricular content, make connections between classroom theories and real situations, and emphasize laboratory work and evaluation. In order to develop our students into productive thinkers we work toward action steps and not merely the accumulation of knowledge. It is our intent that what is learned in the science classroom will be useful in planning for real life.
