English Department
English Department at Cathedral High School is dedicated to providing students with an excellent program of appropriate and challenging literature suited to the needs of college preparatory students. Students are also taught the writing skills needed for higher education and to meet the goal of the mission statement: “. . . . CHS graduates are prepared to understand the world around them, think, read and write critically, formulate intelligent opinions, and express those thoughts in an articulate, credible, and convincing manner. “
The purposes and objectives of the English Department are that students:
- will read and study literature in all genres;
- will master the art of formal essay writing;
- will master the art of revising and editing written work;
- will demonstrate the ability to write clearly, analytically, and critically;
- will communicate orally through speech delivery;
- will show an understanding of poetry by writing poetry;
- will demonstrate a command of English language skills necessary for post-secondary studies;
- will acquire an appreciation of literature;
- will when using multimedia, apply critical thinking skills;
- will become life long readers, writers, thinkers, and learners.
