Business / Career Applications
Business/Career Applications examines the vital roles of Marketing, Sales, Finance & Accounting, Legal Services, Information Technology, and other roles played by many interconnected departments in the business environment. Students will also explore career choices using My Road provided through the Career Center. Students in this course will have access to real career simulations via field trips, class speakers, and Internet applications. Working independently, and, in teams, students will learn skills to succeed in a career of their choice. This course is open to juniors and seniors.

COMPETENCY GOAL 1: Students will demonstrate necessary soft business skills for obtaining and retaining employment. Objectives:
- Identify, discuss, and summarize soft business skills: time management, leadership, team building, emotional intelligence, and personality traits.
COMPETENCY GOAL 2: Students will demonstrate necessary hard business skills used in the work force. Objectives:
- Compose at the keyboard: letterhead paper, flowcharts, outlines, and memos.
- Learn technical communication skills: email, Intranet, and Internet.
COMPETENCY GOAL 3:Students will access technical communication skills to learn about different departments and functions of a typical corporation. Objectives:
- Explore the Human Resource Department: how does it contribute to the function of a corporation: research and prepare job descriptions.
- View the Research and Development Department: conduct and report the results of product testing for a corporation.
- Explore Marketing, Sales and Customer Support: prepare a marketing white paper on a current consumer trend then prepare a marketing survey.
- View the Finance and Accounting Department: research the stock market and prepare a travel budget.
- Explore the Legal Services Department: read and simplify the legal language and research the root of corporate law.
- View the Information Technology Department: convert documents into Web pages that can be viewed and shared over the corporate Intranet and the Worldwide Web (www).
COMPETENCY GOAL 4: Students will be able to use the Worldwide Web (www) to search for information related to their employment future. Objectives:
- Search online and research economic, job, and technology trends.
- Search online and research career paths of students' choices based on their recent experience with the mission-critical functions of a corporation.
